We are always looking for a high level of quality, first-rate technical properties and high durability in our products. Recycled material does not always enable the technical features intended for a specific product, but this is exactly the area where we want to develop and find solutions that ensure Halti’s high-quality standards, without making any compromises over our environmental responsibility. This is not impossible but calls for hard work. The recycled synthetic material used in Halti’s clothes and shoes comes from post-consumer and post-industrial waste. The use of recycled polyester reduces our dependence on crude oil and also allows us to utilise material that would otherwise end up in landfills. We have proudly launched the Halti Hiker Next Generation jacket in spring 2020. It is a monomaterial product made of up to 50% recycled material and can be 100% recycled. 56% of our current base layer collection features Halti’s ECO label withrecycled polyester or Merino wool.
In winter 20/21, 79% of our clothes will have recycled material in them and in summer 2021 (SS21) we will be in 95%. The SS21 collection is made out of: Polyester 62% (of which 54% is recycled PES), Nylon/Polyamid 31% (of which 33% is recycled PA) and Cotton 7% (of which 100% is organic cotton). This amounts to 51,2% sustainable material.
Approximately 62% of our summer shoe collection (SS21) are ECO shoes, which means that their upper main material is made of recycled polyester. The amount of recycled material in an ECO shoe is always more than 60%, depending on the model.
In SS21, addition to recycled fabrics, we will have sleeping bags that have recycled lining and recycled polyester filling. Approximately half of our backpacks and mattresses have recycled material. We are constantly working to increase the amount of recycled materials in all our collections.
It is vital to us that all fabrics and accessories we use in our products are safe for the manufacturer, for the environment and for the end users. We are a bluesign® system partner, which means that bluesign®, a respected independent organisation, helps us to control the chemicals in high detail and to increase the use of healthier and safer components in our products. The bluesign® system partnership fosters occupational safety and a reduction in negative environmental impacts. There are steps a manufacturer need to take before becoming a bluesign® system partner. There are similar steps for brands, garment makers and chemical suppliers. Bluesign® partners must meet strict criteria and guidelines. They also have to complete a bluesign® company assessment, sign the agreement, implement mandatory actions in a given timeframe, follow an agreed road map and be monitored about improvements. Bluesign® monitors its partners after the initial assessment with re-assessments at least every three years, with follow-ups on improvement requirements, with testing and reporting of chemical inventory list and resource key figures.
Addition to that, tracing and spot tests of bluesign® approved products, and unannounced company assessments are made. For the moment, Tier 3 suppliers (like fiber and yarn suppliers) are not bluesign® system partners, so to minimize any risks the manufacturers (Tier 2 suppliers) have a guidance sheet for their input stream management to avoid that critical substances are “imported” through the raw materials, and to use bluesign® approved chemistry in the manufacturing process according to the recommendations in the Technical Data Sheet of the Chemical supplier. Bluesign® also audits us regularly, an makes sure that we are meeting their strict demands and constantly improving our processes. We are assessed by our organizational structure, EHS policy and procedure, supply chain, materials, substances and formulations, reporting and communication and supplier assessment. If we have suppliers that are not bluesign® system partners, it is our responsibility to ensure that management, emissions, social responsibility, OH&S and product safety are managed appropriately. We are committed to following the EU level legislation in restricted substances. We will not use substances restricted under REACH and we will closely monitor the candidate list of substances restricted under SVHC to keep on track with the legislation and latest research. Addition to this we are committed to bluesign® 's list of restricted substances in products which contain bluesign® fabrics. Chemical suppliers need to respect the bluesign MRSL for limits of chemical substances in chemical products (BSBL) and the bluesign® consumer safety limits for finished products (BSSL). Chemical suppliers are expected to ensure the BSSL limits by calculating from the chemical product to the finished product and also backwards from the finished product to the chemical product to respect the BSBL limits. And bluesign® verifyes that chemical suppliers do everything correctly during chemical risk assessment process. Every chemical product that is bluesign® approved has gone through this very stringent process and fully complies with the limits. With regular monitoring and testing, bluesign® ensures the overall integrity of the system. BSBL and BSSL are updated once a year. The bluesign® restricted substances’ list is generated from the BSSL with a corresponding testing matrix which allows us, brands, do RSL testing and ensure that we are always legally compliant.
To make sure we are not only counting on our partners, we have Halti’s own list of restricted substances which are stated in Halti's Fabric Purchace Contract. All our suppliers sign this contract. To become a Halti fabric supplier, suppliers must commit to Halti CoC and Fabric purchase contract requirements as well as specific requirements for each material type. Halti has a formal process for choosing the fabric suppliers to work with. Firstly, we analyze the company’s profile, existing client base as well as the compliance and eco certificates. We run a capability analysis where we ask the supplier for their own assessment and pre-quotations. We analyze their equipment and facilities carefully. If we are about to select a certain supplier, we do site visits, pre-quality inspections and pre-CSR-audits. Once decided to move forward with the partnership, we start with a test order that is closely monitored by our local quality control team. The test orders are followed with regular and periodic compliance audits.

We want to produce technical outdoor apparel that enables demanding sports and outdoor activities and that maintain their functionality in challenging conditions. Often, technical clothes are made from synthetic fibres (PES or PA) that provide desired properties, such as fabric with good wicking properties, breathability and thermal insulation. Even though these fibres are long, small particles, or microplastics, may come off when clothes are washed. Microplastics end up in water systems, carried by wastewater and rain, even though treatment plants are able to separate 99% of microplastics. Massive floating islands of non-biodegradable microplastics have hit the news widely and also raise great concern here in Finland. We aim to tackle this problem by utilising post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste in our production. Our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic waste by making long-lasting high-quality products and by giving instructions on how to maintain clothes properly:
* Wash synthetic clothes less frequently. Sometimes it is enough that clothes are kept outside in the fresh air.
* Wash synthetic and natural fibres separately. Studies have shown that in this way, microfibres adhere better to the fabric.
* Avoid delicate wash cycles and half-full loads, as larger volumes of water loosens microplastics more easily.
* Recycle plastic product packages and used apparel.
To make information about the origins and materials of our products more easily available, we created ECO labels for our products. ECO means that a product must meet at least one of the following requirements:
*The material used meets the bluesign® requirements.
*The product is made from recycled material.
The DWR treatment is fully PFC-free.
*The product is made from organic cotton.
*High-quality certified down feathers are used, and the feathers are traceable by-products of the food industry.

Our goal is to continuously increase the number of ECO products. In summer 2021 our entire Halti Outdoor collection will be 100% ECO. We are more than proud of this achievement.
