Our generation has always taken our clean nature as a given. We at Halti have set our sights far into the future and we are doing all we can so that later generations can enjoy it like we have. All of Halti’s operations are based on respecting the environment and other people. After all, our products are designed for outdoor life and sports. With Think Ahead, our sustainable development programme, we take responsibility for our social, environmental and financial footprints. We have much work ahead of us, but we are continuously trying to do better–in every phase of the product lifecycle.
We manufacture our products mainly in countries outside Finland which unfortunately causes logistic emissions. We use air, ship and train freight. We have reached our target of reducing the air freight to under 1% (in 19/20 season, 0,74% to be exact, of our logistics was air freight). At the moment approximately 2,21% of our logistics is train freight which we wish to increase. We are constantly looking for more shoe manufacturers inside Europe to largely reduce the logistic emissions. To minimize our air freight, we evaluate our purchases together with our sales team well in advance. With this evaluation we are able to purchase right amount of materials, have enough time to produce and keep our schedule in logistics.
In 2018 we used 2292kg plastic polybags and 5245 kg of cartons in our bulk production logistics. This amount increased, due to growth in business, to 2745kg plastic / 6942kg carton in 2019. Our target is to ensure that all our plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025 in the countries where we sell our products. We’re looking at packaging waste in the context of the local recycling infrastructure. If systems are in place to recycle packaging – and capture the value contained in the packaging that’s been thrown away – this reduces the overall environmental impact of the packaging waste.
Our cartons and plastic polybags are recyclable. We have 95% recycled plastic content in our FW20/21 bulk production polybags. In SS21 season we will have 100% recycled plastic polybags. Plastic is chosen because it protects the quality of clothes during shipping. Leaving the factories our products are packaged as tightly as possible but keeping them from pressing too much.
The use of 3D design program in our processes reduces logistics and packaging. By using 3D, we have reduced the amount of salesman samples over 50% from SS20 to SS21 season.
